Barcarolle for string orchestra was composed in 1983 while studying composition as a young undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Intended to invoke the elegant dance-like quality of the barcarolle, the harmonic content was influenced by an early interest in the music of Poulenc, Hindemith, and the jazz recordings of Vince Guraldi.
