A setting of selected verses from the Latin liturgical text, Veni Sancte Spiritus (Come Holy Spirit) opens with bell-like articulations as if to call together a congregation. The work then unfolds in relation to the text’s consistent references to light. Initially, this light is joyous and bright, but as the piece transforms itself, the light becomes warm, quiet, and peaceful. Vani Sancte Spiritus was commissioned by conductor Patrick Gorman and the Philharmonic Chorus of Madison to commemorate their 60th concert season anniversary.
